Somerville Health Foundation Announces Recipients of 2017 Community Funding

Somerville Health Foundation Grantees gathered on September 7 to celebrate this year's awardees.

SOMERVILLE, Mass. — The Somerville Health Foundation (SHF) recently announced the recipients of this year’s community funding. Mary Cassesso, Cambridge Health Alliance’s chief community officer, joined SHF trustees to award the grants and honor the eight organizations that were selected. Through this funding, the Foundation strives to promote and support preventive health efforts to improve health outcomes of the residents of Somerville.

The focus for this year’s round of grants is to address services such as parenting sobriety groups, mental health support and skills building for youth and adults, outdoor activities, programming and health screenings for seniors and expanded food services and education.

SHF presented each of the eight nonprofit organizations with checks totaling over $27,000, with awards ranging from $2,500 to $4,000. This year’s SHF grantees are the Boys and Girls Club of Medford and Somerville, Brazilian Women’s Club, Mystic Learning Center, Neighborhood Counseling and Community Services, Inc., Parenting Journey, Somerville Cambridge Elder Services, Somerville Homeless Coalition and VNA of Eastern Middlesex.

The Somerville Health Foundation, a nonprofit corporation, was founded 21 years ago in 1996 shortly after Cambridge Hospital and Somerville Campus merged to form

CHA. Trustees from CHA who live in Somerville also serve as trustees for the Foundation, joined by a representative of the Mayor of Somerville. The Somerville Community HealthAgenda, part of CHA’s Community Health Improvement Department, provides administrative support.
